Integrated echocardiographic assessment for constrictive pericarditis

Advanced
Version 2026.10.1

Combines inflow respiratory variation (mitral >25%, tricuspid >40% in magnitude), medial annular e′ (>7 cm/s) and hepatic vein reversal pattern as the document describes. Constriction is a clinical and hemodynamic diagnosis; equivocal echo findings need CT, CMR or catheterization.

Quick reference:↑ Pericardium
Applicability
  • Suspected constrictive pericarditis with a comprehensive diastology examination, accurate ECG and simultaneous respirometry.
  • Mixed constrictive-restrictive disease (radiation, post-surgical) may impair LV function and blur the pattern.
  1. Next
Is there exaggerated respiratory variation: mitral E >25% or tricuspid E magnitude >40%, as (expiration − inspiration)/expiration?
    %
    %
Record mitral and/or tricuspid E variation on the first beats of inspiration and expiration with a respirometer.
